83 Michigan Counties, 83 Bars

It’s no lie, we have a pretty great bar culture here in Michigan. From the down and dirty dives, to high end classy affairs, there is somewhere for everyone, and every taste. There are holes in the wall, and wood paneled beauties. You can meet friends for beers and a good talk at some, and enjoy a loud local band at others. There are so many to choose from across Michigan that we thought we’d help you find some of the coolest ones in each of our 83 counties.

Each of these spots offers something unique, from the decor, to the food, to the patrons and owners. Some are drinks only, while other bars are specifically known for offering incredible home cooked meals as well.

There are bars on this list that we know you’ve driven by dozens of times and always wondered if it was worth a stop. We lay out what to expect at these gems, and what patrons love about their favorite watering holes. This is your guide to explore some new places, or remember why you’ve always loved your neighborhood spot.

As always, we encourage you to drink responsibly, and never drink and drive.

The Great Experiment that Shouldn’t be Necessary

When students got their textbooks at the beginning of the year at San Mateo High School, they also received the Yondr pouch, a locking device for their phones.

The phone slides into it and gets locked through a magnetic device. It’s not unlocked again until the final bell rings. The procedure will repeat every day for the rest of the school year.

It’s Because They Have More People to Drink With

According to the latest findings, older adults who have children are happier than those who are childless, with one important caveat: their kids don’t live at home when they grow up.

We All Need a Drink

On Wednesday, for the first time ever, the German government sold 30-year bonds at a negative interest rate. The bonds pay no coupon interest at all. Yet bidders at the auction were willing to pay more than the face value they would receive back when the bonds mature.

The sale added to the mountain of negative-yielding bonds around the world that investors have gobbled up, suggesting that they expect global growth and inflation to remain subpar for years to come. After all, accepting a negative yield on a bond — agreeing, in effect, to lose money in exchange for parking money in a safe place — could reflect expectations that yields will sink even further into negative territory.

Now That’s a Bit Extreme

An Irish bar in Florida poured all of its Proper No. Twelve whiskey down the toilet after Conor McGregor punched an old man in the face at a Dublin pub.

Video posted by Sean Rice, the owner of the Salty Shamrock in Apollo Beach, shows staff at the bar disposing of several bottles of the whiskey McGregor founded while a poster of McGregor with an Irish flag draped over his shoulders is propped up on the toilet.

“That’s the lowlife there that we’ve all supported,” Rice says in the video as he and several employees enter the bathroom. “All right guys, get that in the toilet, because that’s where his whiskey belongs right now. Proper Twelve, to hell with it. It will never be sold at this bar.”

Release Your Inner Fierce Homosexual

Four Loko appears to be entering the battle to become the drink of choice for the modern “bro” with a new hard seltzer.

On Tuesday, Four Loko posted images on Twitter and Instagram showing a Four Loko seltzer labeled the “hardest seltzer in the universe,” with 14% alcohol by volume. For comparison, White Claw has an ABV of 5%.

“Hard Seltzers ran so we could fly,” the caption reads.
